Place Name
Named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (May 26, 1650 – June 16, 1722), a brilliant military tactician who won many victories on the battlefield. His most famous was at Blenheim on August 13, 1704 against the French and Bavarians, in the War of the Spanish Succession. His victory on the banks of the River Danube changed the course of the war, which had been going in France’s favour. France suffered some 27,000 casualties including the commander-in-chief, Marshal Tallard, who was taken captive to England. Many roads in England were named after Marlborough and his many victories. This road was once much longer, its southern end disappeared in a housing redevelopment sometime after 1965.
