Margery Roper was the daughter of John and Margery Tattersall, who lived at Well Hall, the estate that she inherited from her parents with her husband John. John Roper was a surveyor of the customs of the Cinque Ports in Kent. He and Margery married in 1502 and had two sons. When John died their son also called John inherited the titles of lord of the manor and it continued down the family line until the estate was sold sometime around 1733.
