Military history. Marks the British and Portuguese victory over the French forces at the Battle of Salamanca, in Western Spain, on July 22, 1812 during the Peninsular War. The allies, under the command of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, managed to continually outflank Marshal Auguste Marmont’s army. The battle established Wellington as an offensive general. It was said that he “defeated an army of 40,000 men in 40 minutes.”
