Place Name
Takes its name from a former Cistercian nunnery, near Cookhill in Worcestershire. It is said to have been founded by Isabel de Mauduit, wife of William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl of Warwick in 1260, but is believed to pre-date that. The priory was dissolved in 1540, two or three years later than most, and the nuns, who were known for their piety, given pensions. This road like many in the surrounding area is named after a former religious house in a reference to the ruin of Lesnes Abbey, which gave Abbey Wood its name.
