Boxgrove Road, SE2

Place Name

Named after Boxgrove Priory, a ruined priory in the village of Boxgrove in Sussex. It was founded in the reign of Henry I, sometime around 1123. The Priory was dissolved in 1536 by Henry VIII during his land grab against the Catholic Church. This is one of a cluster of roads around Abbey Wood that are named after former religious houses around the UK in reference to the former Lesnes Abbey nearby.
