Alexander McLeod (1832 – 1902) was the first secretary of the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, he had previously taken over as secretary of the Royal Arsenal Supply Association, when co-founder William Rose was forced to emigrate to North America after losing his job. The RACS owned Bostall Farm, which they had bought in 1886 to provide vegetables for the Co-op’s shops. They later bought Suffolk Place Farm in 1899 and between 1900 and 1914 the RACS built the Bostall Estate. Once known as Tin Check Island after the Society’s dividend system, and known locally as The Co-op Estate. This street, like others on the Bostall Estate, is named after key figures and achievements of the Co-operative movement.
