Place Name
This was originally plain Sutton Lane leading to Sutton Court Road. Preserves the name of the old manor of Sutton Court, the house of which was knocked down in 1896. Mentioned as Suthtona, meaning south farm, in 1181, coming from the Old English words sūth and tūn. It was spelt Suttone in 1222, and in reference to Chiswick it was referred to as Sutton Chesewyk in 1367. And in 1456 noting the area’s fine location as Sutton al. Bewregarde – the latter part meaning beau and regard from the Old French meaning fine view. It has also been suggested that the lane takes its name from Sir Richard Sutton, a lawyer who oversaw James I’s petty cash expenditure, and who held a large amount of property in East Acton which he left to his daughter, Elizabeth. However, given that the name of the manor predates him, it is not the case.
