Place Name
Unlike Roxborough also within Harrow Roxeth, after which this street is named, does not find its origins from nesting rooks. In fact the name dates back to Saxon times when it was mentioned in an AD845 Anglo-Saxon charter as Et Hroces Seaðum. It means Hrōc’s pit or hollow, from the personal name Hrōc and the Old English word sēath, which is thought to refer to a depression from where the springs of the River Crane rise. Following the Norman Conquest it became Roxhe in 1235 and took its modern spelling in 1280. It was laid out over agricultural land that was part of Parker’s Farm.
