Northfields, SW18

Place Name

Until this area was developed it was farmland and as the name suggests this would have been a field to the north of Wandsworth where crops would have grown. The Northfields were still there as late as 1865. Some indication of how long the area was used as arable land comes in the corresponding Southfields with one early written reference coming in 1247 as Suthfeld. The street was laid out only at the end of the 20thCentury as part of wider residential redevelopment of the formerly industrial area on the western bank of the Wandle as it joins the River Thames.
