Place Name
Henry Mot was a 14thCentury landowner who also gave his name to the area, it means Mot’s gorse scrub. In 1623 it was recorded as Furse Farm and four years later as Motes Firs Ferm becoming Motspur in 1827 and in 1876 Mosper Farm. John Field in Place-Names of Greater London writes: “Another variant of the name appears to have been applied to all or part of the estate from the mid-eighteenth century – Notcurse Farm 1765 and Nutcars 1789 – but these forms are explicable if a great deal of the information about names happened to be trasmitted orally.”
