Place Name
Named after the nearby river, Mayes Brook, a tributary of River Roden. It was named after the family of Robert le May in 1285 or one of his descendants Richard le May in the early 14thCentury. David Mills in A Dictionary of London Place Names writes: “The name Goodmayes just a mile north of here [Mayesbrook Park] seems not to be related, although the medieval surname Godemay, like May, derives from Middle English may ‘young lad or girl'”.
