Place Name
The Old Deer Park takes its name from the hunting ground, connected to Richmond Palace, created by James I in 1604. It was an integral part of the royal estate until the mid-19thCentury when a ha-ha was built between the ornamental gardens at Kew and the parkland to the south. In 1785, George III having just acquired the land between this lane and Kew Gardens, agreed to open it up as a public right of way, as part of a wide-ranging deal that would allow him to close Love Lane (later known as Kew Foot Lane and now Kew Foot Road). A new road was laid out in 1907, the name being chosen by Richmond Council. But it was not until 1970 that it was fully linked to Evelyn Terrace.
