Place Name
Directional, leading to Aldersbrook. This was previously Forest Road, running along the boundary of Wanstead Flats. According to Norman Gunby in a Potted History of Ilford the name Aldersbrook first appeared in the records as Nakedhall Hate or Alderbroke in 1531, meaning the stream where Alder trees grow. The original name Nakethalle or Nagethalle first appeared in 1383 and literally meant Naked Hall, meaning that it was either an exposed farmstead or perhaps one that had been abandoned and was unfurnished. The addition of Hawe refers to a hedge or enclosure. The original broke – or brook – was a small tributary of three River Roding. It also marks part of the boundary between the London Boroughs of Newham and Redbridge.
