Kings Farm Avenue, TW10

Place Name

Queen Caroline purchased 80 acres of farmland east of Manor Road as a gift for her husband King George III – known as “Farmer George” for his interest in agriculture. Janet Dunbar in A Prospect of Richmond writes: “[The king] used to ride over from his palace at Kew to supervise the work at the farm.” Satirists mocked his interest in these mundane topics rather than art but in fact he was at the cutting edge of an agricultural revolution that was to see a huge increase in the yield of crops, making the nation more self-sufficient. As well as the farm in Richmond he had another three at Windsor, where he bred cattle and sheep. The farmhouse, Kings Farm Lodge, was pulled down in 1898 and the road was built 30 years later
