The Reverend Horace Granville Monroe (1872 – 1933) was vicar of Mortlake between 1909 and 1918. From here his career flourished becoming the vicar of Wimbledon and then Canon of Southwark and Sub-Dean of the Cathedral where he wrote, The Story of Southwark Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral fellowship: A pilgrimage. He died in tragic circumstances, having fallen overboard from the liner Berengaria, while on a holiday to Canada following the death of his wife, Francis, a few months earlier. It was, incidentally, the same voyage being taken by Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour Prime Minister who was visiting the US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This street was named in 1952.
