Place Name

Developed by the Lowther family between the wars. The Lowthers (the Earls of Lonsdale since 1807) own extensive estates, at one stage around 75,000 acres, in Cumberland. Indeed, the village of Lowther has been home to the family from 1283, and they remain the largest landowners in the Lake District. During the 18th and 19th centuries, they dominated the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, managing them in a feudal manner. with much of their wealth derived from the area’s coal mines. Hugh Lowther, who was 5th Earl of Lonsdale at the time this street was developed in 1928, had residences at Lowther Castle, at Whitehaven Castle, Barleythorpe and Carlton House Terrace, London. Westmoreland Road and Suffolk Road are also named after the family’s estates.
