Colham Avenue, UB7

Place Name

Originally Dock Road, as it ran alongside Otter Dock, serving the Grand Junction Canal. It was renamed when much of the dock was filled in, with the new road originally called Colham Road, on the west, and Ernest Road, on the east. It was changed again to its current name to avoid confusion with the nearby Colham Road. The name Colham comes from the Anglo-Saxon landowner Cola who owned a pasture in the area sometime around AD883, when it was recorded as Colanhomm. By the time the Domesday Book was being compiled in AD1086 it had mutated to Coleham, and was contracted further still sometime around 1180 to Colam.
