Place Name
This originally ran behind a terrace of houses called Burrows Buildings, which were built sometime around 1770 on land which was part of the Christ Church estate. Sheila Fairfield in The Streets of London speculates that the builder may have been related to the Reverend John Burrows, rector of Christ Church from 1770 until his death. The buildings – and hence the mews – may have been named after the rector (1733 – 1786), who was certainly well-connected. He had previously preached at St Clement Danes where among his congregation was Dr Johnson and stood high in the estimation of literary ladies, including Hannah More and Mrs. Elizabeth Montagu. Until development, this was agricultural land and fields used for rope making.
