Bonner Road, E2

Place Name

Named after Edmund Bonner (circa 1500 – September 5, 1569), the twice ordained Roman Catholic Bishop of London. Having initially helped Henry VIII create a divide from the church in Rome, he soon repented and returned to his faith. He became notorious as Bloody Bonner for his role in the persecution of heretics under Queen Mary I, and ended his life as a prisoner under Elizabeth I. The Bishops of London were lords of the manor of Stepney. The site of their former residence is found partly within the grounds of Victoria Park. It was first recorded as Bishope Hall in 1495. Bishop Bonner was the last to use the manor before it passed into lay hands in the 16thCentury.
