Place Name
Complementing nearby King Street, it is named in honour of Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II. The road was laid out to provide a direct route from Guildhall to the River Thames following the Great Fire of 1666, it followed part of the route of the old Soper Lane, so-called because it was where soap-makers lived and plied their wares. Gillian Bebbington in London Street Names says that it is the oldest Queen Street in London.
