Place Name

An old name possibly of Anglo-Saxon origin. A soke was a judicial area that granted certain rights and freedoms immediately outside a port, in this case the gates to the City of London. Sheila Fairfield in The Streets of London says that these were granted to a group of knights in the 10thCentury.
