Place Name
Named after its 18thCentury builder, Benjamin Hammett, a haberdasher and businessman who served as an MP. He laid out this road in 1771. He was instrumental in the abolition of the penalty of death by burning with the passing of The Treason Act of 1790. In 1797, despite by now spending much of his time in West Wales to concentrate on his tin mining interests, he was elected Lord Mayor of London but he refused to take up the position… and was fined £1,000. He died in 1800.
