Place Name
Previously just plain Bell Alley, it was named after a former inn that stood on the corner with Coleman Street, from the early 17thCentury. In 1835 Moorgate Street was cut through the middle and the street divided into Bell Alley on the western side and Great Bell Alley on the eastern side. When the General Post Office opened a telegraph office on the eastern side, Great Bell Alley was renamed as Telegraph Street and Bell Alley as Great Bell Alley.
