Thought to be named after Elias Gofaire, an early 14thCentury property owner and merchant who on his death said his properties should be sold for “pious uses”. In 1313 it was written as Gofairelane. It has been variously spelt in numerous wills as Gofayrlane in 1318, Govayrlane in 1339, Goveres lane in 1349, G(l)over lane in 1385 and Gofair lane.
