Place Name
Despite its close proximity to St Paul’s Cathedral the origins of this street name do not lie with the church. It is named instead after Godalming, in Surrey, where godalmins, thought to be a particular type of calves’ leather that was traded here, were prepared in the early part of the 18thCentury. It was previously called Paul’s Chain, after the chain placed here to prevent access to St Paul’s Cathedral churchyard during services. Previous spellings include Godalmin Street.
