Directional. The name Orpington was first recorded in 1032 and is named after an Anglo-Saxon farmer owner called Orped. Experts say the name suggests someone who was stout, active and bold. Within a decade it was written down as Orpedington and by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, it had become Orpinton. The modern spelling is surprisingly old first appearing as early as 1207.
