Place Name

Military history. Phineas Pett (November 1, 1570 – August 1647) was a famous Woolwich shipwright during the reign of Charles I. He also built one of the first dry docks in England and also the celebrated ship called the Royal Sovereign, at Woolwich in 1637. Phineas Pett Road in Eltham is also named after him as is Petts Wood, which were once owned by him.
