Place Name
The origin of the name has been lost in time but there are several possible attributions. It is possible it could have been so-called after an old inn of the name, which in turn may have been a brothel, as with the reason of Cock Lane in the City. Alternatively, it may have been a reference, although rather late, to the area’s French inhabitants, the cock or rooster, having been a national symbol of France since the French Revolution. Or, it could have been a place where cock-fighting took place or fighting cocks were sold.
