Place Name
This street was first recorded as Fridaiestraite or Fridesistrate in the 12thCentury. By the following century it was being recorded as Frydaystrate. It is thought, given its connection to Cheapside and proximity to Queenhithe dock, that this may have been a fish market, Fridays being a day of abstinence from meat for Roman Catholic medieval England. Alternatively it may be after a personal name from someone called Frigedaeg.
