Place Name
Located close to Camomile Street, Wormwood Street too was named after the wild plants that grew around the London Wall. An area around the wall was deliberately left as wasteland for defence reasons and it was in this area that wormwood flourished. Wormwood was once used as a medicinal herb, and is added to alcoholic drinks such as vermouth, which means a wine flavoured by wormwood, and absinthe.
