Remembers the former name for this area of Hounslow. Gillian Morris in the History of Spring Grove explains: “We must travel back over five hundred years to the year 1436. The land from Syon Lane to the eastern end of the small town of Hounslow was very marshy without houses or cottages, the name of this area was Smalborow, becoming Smalleborowe Closes in 1547 and Smallberry Green in 1680.” The name a reference to a narrow mound or tumulus, from the Old English words smœl and beorg possibly referring to a long barrow that was here.
