Recalls the name of the old manor of Shroffold, that was first recorded in the 13thCentury as Shrafolt in 1240 from the Old English words scræf and holt meaning the thicket with a cave or hovel. Over time the name mutated to be spelt Shofholt in 1344, Schroffold in 1489, and featured as Shrofield on the 1805 Ordnance Survey.
