Place Name
Takes its name from the obvious fact that it lies on the southern side of Wimbledon Hill, although the name is slightly misleading in that this part a plateau, making the street itself relatively flat. The southern side of the hill will tend to be more exposed to the sun and hence warmer than the northern side (see also nearby Sunnyside). The hill itself is what gave Wimbledon its name, being made up of the Old English word dūn meaning hill and Wynnmann, the name of a local landowner. The hill itself rises to about 57 meters (187 feet) above sea level.
