Place Name
A group of nine large houses that were laid out over the grounds of the former Kinellan House, a former old people’s home, sometime around 1999. Neal Ransome, in Wimbledon Village: A History Told Through Its Street Names says that it was intended to be named after the house, which was a reference to the picturesque Loch Kinellan in the Highlands. Herbert Fortescue Lawford, the original owner and 1887 Wimbledon champion, had connections to Scotland. But the developer spelt the name wrong, and instead it took on a new name and meaning, Kinsella being an Irish surname meaning proud – it is an Anglicised version of the name Cinnsealach. The Kinsella family originated in the area that is now County Wexford but have no known connection to Wimbledon.
