Place Name
Magdalen College, Oxford University owned extensive land in Earlsfield, and began to develop it for housing from the early 1930s. A core element of its masterplan for the area was the Openview estate, so named as it literally borders a large area of open space. This open space, now a green heart for the overall estate, was planned as sports playing fields; nowadays it includes a number of facilities, including allotments at its northern end, rugby, hockey, bowls and cricket clubs, and tennis courts. Among the various sports clubs using the fields are Battersea Ironsides RFC. The street named simply Openview runs down the eastern edge of the fields, with the complementary Fieldview along its western edge.
