John Lidiard (1835 – March 20, 1917), was the first Mayor of Wandsworth, with his term of office running from 1900 to 1901. Lidiard, a solicitor, was a major figure in the former Wandsworth vestry, the prototype metropolitan borough council, and had been involved in the discussions about the transfer of powers in the preparations for the introduction of the boroughs at the dawn of the 20thCentury. A Conservative he represented Clapham South. Lidiard’s initials still appear in the Mayoral chain of office. John’s son Sir Herbert Lidiard (1864 – July 14, 1941) was Mayor of Paddington on three occasions. Lidiard Road was laid out in the 1930s as part of the Openview Estate.
