Hasty Close, CR4

Place Name

Patrick Joseph Hasty (March 17, 1934 – August 2000) was a Northern Irish footballer who represented Great Britain at the 1960 Summer Olympics. But it was his role as a centre forward for Tooting and Mitcham United that he is remembered here. On his debut for Tooting and Mitcham he scored four goals against Barnet in a 7–2 win. The Tooting and Mitcham Archive on Instagram says: “Paddy Hasty is a name synonymous with Tooting and Mitcham United. A superb centre forward he scored 193 goals in 245 appearances and played in the historic FA Cup third round tie against eventual winners Nottingham Forest in January 1959. Won a number of honours at Tooting including the 1960 treble of Isthmian League title, London Senior and Surrey Senior Cups. He went onto sign professional forms at his local club Aldershot. A Tooting legend in every sense of the word.” He later went on to play for Leyton Orient, Queens Park Rangers, Aldershot and Guildford City. This is one of four roads that honours former star players of the club nicknamed The Terrors whose Sandy Lane ground was here from 1932 until the 1990s when it moved to The Hub at Bishopsford Road. They moved again to a new ground called Imperial Fields in 2002.
