Duntshill Road, SW18

Place Name

Dunt’s Hill was first recorded in the 17thCentury and later became the site of Duntshill Mills calico printing works. But the name itself has its origins stretching much further back, according to the English Place-Name Society it started life in the records as Duneshull in 1185 as is thought to mean the hill of the manor of Down (or Downe), it being ones of the manors closely associated with Battersea and the surrounding area. In any case the name mutated down the ensuing centuries becoming Douneshull in 1413, Dunshilmede in 1548 , Dunchhill in 1609. This road was laid out over the former site of Duntshill Villa.
