Place Name
Burntwood Grange stood between Wandsworth Common and Garratt Lane for nearly a century. It was built in 1832 and noted in a book by Edward Kemp for its magnificent gardens and conservatory “recently redesigned and replanted by the established Tooting nursery of Messrs Rollisson”. It was the seat of a H Grisewood, Esq. The name predated the property, it was first recorded here in the 17thCentury but why the wood was burnt, most likely either to clear the area or for the manufacture of charcoal has not been passed down to us. The area was developed between the wars.
