Beechcroft Road, SW17

Place Name

Originally called Obligation Road, meaning a road which was obliged to stay open for public use and maintained at the landowner’s expense, this was a former lane which linked the High Road with Back Lane (later Glenburnie Road). The road ran down the back of the Middlesex County Lunatic Asylum. It was developed in the 1830s and took its present name in 1881. The developers no doubt wanted to hold onto the allusion of the countryside that once dominated this area.
