Few street names can be quite as literal as this one with a rare double meaning. In road terms it is a close, it leads to nowhere; but it is also a literal description as it is a road very close to the River Wandle. This street (partly a private road) was laid out along a track which was on land belonging to the Grade II-listed Wandle Bank, the seat of Wandle Manor.
