Place Name
Although not featured on any Ordnance Survey map this was originally Brickfield Lane, a clue to its industrial heritage. But when as Carshalton began to attract commuters from the city at the beginning of the 19thCentury, the area underwent gentrification. A terrace called Brickfield Cottages was pulled down and replaced with Laburnum Villas, soon afterwards the name was changed to Brookfield Avenue. As A E Jones in From Medieval Manor to London Suburb: An Obituary of Carshalton, explains “to conceal the former use of their land”. Although he adds: “the brickfield had ceased to produce bricks long before.”
