Place Name
This road connected Hayes, via Baston Farm to Keston, across Hayes Common. Although a John de Bastane was recorded living here in the tax roll for Hayes in 1301, it is more likely that he took the name of the manor since it was first recorded as Bestane in 1240, where it is believed to have originated from the Old English bœc-stān meaning a baking stone, that is a flat stone used for baking. In 1254 the spelling had mutated into Bestan and Bicstane.
