Barnet Way, NW7

Place Name

Laid out between the wars, it partly follows the route of the former Hankins Lane. A great wood once covered Middlesex and Hertfordshire, and until the late 11thCentury it remained as such. At some stage areas of this woodland were cleared by burning, hence the name which meant burnt place. It was first mentioned sometime after the Domesday Book as Barneto, becoming La Barnette by AD1248.
