Place Name

Commemorating one of the most famous and romanticised battles in British history, the Battle of Balaclava, which took place on October 25, 1854 during the Crimean War. Although a strategic defeat for the allied forces of British, French and Turkish troops the degree of heroism displayed made it one of the most important in regimental history, given the use of the Charge of the Light Brigade, the Charge of the Heavy Brigade and the Thin Red Line. Despite the bravery of the British troops, the Imperial Russian Army were able to hold them off and the battle ended in an effective stalemate. On its return, the Light Brigade had a mounted strength of 195 officers and men from an original strength of 673. Of the casualties 247 men were killed or wounded. Patriotic developers would often name roads after famous battles.
