Place Name
This was previously the site of the manor of Alferthyng, which means half of a fouth part, in other words an eighth of what had once been a substantial manor. It was first mentioned as Elverding in a document from sometime around 1230. It was spelt Alferthung in 1268 and Halfefarthing in 1544. The name comes from the Old English words healf and feorðung. It appears that at least from around the time of Henry IV the manor was in the hands of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. It was originally much longer, running all the way from South Street ti East Hill, but in late Victorian times the section along the boundary of Wandsworth Common was renamed West Side.
