Place Name
Eadda or Æddi’s estate from an Anglo-Saxon personal name and the word camp, meaning an enclosed area in Old English. John Field in Place-Names of Greater London speculates that since the towns of Addington and Addiscombe – first mentioned as Edescamp in 1229 – are close by, it may have been that the same person owned them both. The East Croydon Community Organisation says the street first appeared on a map of 1594, connecting the town of Croydon with the hamlet of Addiscombe to the east (on the corner of today’s Sandilands). It was known as Upper Addiscombe Road in the 19thCentury, and lay along a spring line, the water running downslope to the north in the direction of Lower Addiscombe Road.
