Worfield Street, SW11

Place Name

When wealthy market gardener Henry Juer died in 1878 he left his fortune and the family’s 16 acres in Battersea to his nephew and various cousins. Among them was Lucy Pugh, a cousin, who with other family members developed the land in the 1880s. She named this street after the Shropshire parish of Worfield and Rudge, where she was living at the time. The architect Frederick Wheeler submitted layout and drainage plans, for this road and neighbouring Juer Street, suggesting that he may also have designed the houses. These were built by Stewart and Bowes between 1889 and 1895. The name Worfield comes from its location on the river Worfe and the surrounding countryside (fields).
