Evelyn Pierrepont, (born sometime around 1665 – March 5, 1726) was 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull, and created Marquess of Dorchester in 1706 while serving as a commissioner for the union with Scotland. For a time he lived at the former Berrymead Priory in Acton, which his family (one son and five daughters) used every year from 1708 to 1740 during the spring and summer months, as was customary for the wealthy escaping the City’s plague-ridden streets. Berrymead had previously been held by the Marquis of Halifax who died there in 1700 after which it was sold to Pierrepont. George II was a regular visitor. The house was knocked down in the 1980s to make way for the car park on Acton Lane and its grounds stretched behind and in front of the house where Everyone Active pool and gym is now.
