Place Name
By the time Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, had gotten around to developing this last part of the family’s vast London estate in the 1830s, the supply of people, titles, and properties the Grosvenors’ used for street names on Mayfair and Belgravia had been exhausted. He was forced to seek inspiration elsewhere. Gillian Bebbington in London Street Names writes: “They therefore had recourse to other people’s titles, and named the new streets of Pimlico after a variety of euphonious dukedoms, earldoms, marquessates and baronies.” As well as this street, there is Aylesford, Cambridge, Chichester, Clarendon, Cumberland, Denbigh, Gloucester, Sussex, and Winchester nearby. To this could have been added Colchester, Cornwall, and Worcester but they disappeared under the expansion of Pimlico School now Academy.
